Our task is enormous.
At Bosma Enterprises, our goal is to eliminate
unemployment among blind Hoosiers who want to work. How big
is the challenge we face? The average unemployment rate for
people who are blind or visually impaired is a crushing
70%.
Being a good employee isn’t hard for people who are
blind. Unfortunately, finding meaningful employment is. At
Bosma Enterprises, we’re dedicated to changing that.
And with your help, we can do it.
"Bosma Enterprises is dedicated to empowering people who are blind or visually impaired by creating opportunities that lead to the achievement of each individual’s employment, economic, social, and self-determination goals."
The opportunity to achieve your personal best… isn’t
this what you wish for yourself and your loved ones? People
who are blind or visually impaired want professional and personal
success just as much as people who are sighted. However, when
Hoosiers who are blind attempt to find work, they often must
prove not only that they belong in the specific job for which
they’re applying… they must also prove they belong
in the workforce at all.
At
Bosma, we work to overcome the obstacles that for too long
have prevented Hoosiers who are blind from being seen as equally
valuable members of our workforce and our community. Through
a number of targeted programs, Bosma provides training, employment
opportunities, and community education that enable dreams
to be realized. These programs are accredited by the Commission
on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Bosma operates as a unique non-profit hybrid, relying on a
combination of private gifts, corporate and foundation contributions,
and profit-driven contracts to create jobs and fund training
and outreach programs. We see our task as a two-way street.
We prepare people who are blind to meet the challenges they
choose to take on and we prepare the business community to
successfully integrate people who are blind into their business
plans. The results of these efforts are nothing short of amazing.
Why are we so passionate about what we do? Because we know
that ‘work’ represents more than just a paycheck.
It’s also about personal fulfillment and the dignity
of being in control of one’s own life. At Bosma, we’re
excited to be helping people who are blind earn a livable
income and achieve the satisfaction that comes with fulfilling
employment.

What is today known as ‘Bosma Enterprises,’ was established in 1915 through
an act of the Indiana legislature. At that time, the organization
was known as the ‘Board of Industrial Aid for the Blind.’
In 1984, the state of Indiana changed the name to ‘Charles
E. Bosma Industries’ as a tribute to Charles
Bosma, a beloved legislator who had served in the Indiana
General Assembly for 18 years and who contributed greatly
to the organization’s success.
Over the years, the agency came to focus increasingly on developing
employment opportunities for Hoosiers who are blind. In 1988,
during the Reagan era of reduced government, the decision
was finalized to make Bosma a private, not-for-profit
501(c)(3) agency.
With the need to be self-sustaining came exciting new ideas
for generating revenue and developing more employment opportunities
for people who are blind. In 1993, the organization moved
into a 55,000 sq. ft. facility located just east of downtown
Indianapolis. Here, Bosma had enough room to house
a growing production and warehousing operation, as well as
provide offices for its administrative staff.
In 2005, Bosma Enterprises moved again, this time into a 100,000 sq. ft.
facility on the northwest side of Indianapolis that offers 70,000 sq.
ft. of production and warehouse space, along with 30,000 sq. ft. of
space for offices, classrooms, training rooms, and rehabilitation
services. Today, Bosma Enterprises continues to build on its long
legacy of service. Bosma’s efforts have evolved to include vocational
assessments, on-site organizational employment, job placement services,
counseling services, and rehabilitation services, as well as training
and outreach programs that include youth services. Our production and
warehousing operations now employ 73 people, 84% of whom are blind or
visually impaired. A staff of 38, of whom 21% are blind or visually
impaired, manage the human services programs and business operations.
