Phil's Story

“The nurturing and cultivating environment at Bosma Enterprises is made for success building”

Even though Phil was born with stickler’s syndrome, a genetic disorder than causes serious vision, hearing and joint problems, he has always carried a strong desire to succeed.

Born 2 months premature, Phil’s vision loss began deteriorating at age four after being struck in the face with a tee ball. By year 2000, Phil was diagnosed with glaucoma, leaving him with no real useable vision.

From grade five until high school, Phil attended the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. After graduation, Phil wanted to further his education. That’s when he applied for Butler University. Phil was accepted and before he knew it, graduated with a degree in music and business from Butler University.

Drumming to his own beat; music has always been a passion for Phil. Playing the drums and piano in his band, Gin & Tonic; Phil has never let his vision loss get in the way of his dreams.

While continuing his passion for music, Phil began searching for stable employment after graduation. That’s when Phil discovered Bosma Enterprises and an open position in housekeeping. Eager to find any type of employment, he applied and was offered the job.

“When I first came to Bosma Enterprises, I set the bar low for achievement – I was a mess,” says Phil.

After about six months, Bosma Enterprises needed some extra workers to help out in the sign shop and production area. Phil jumped at the opportunity. His hard work paid off and in no time Phil was hired on full-time in the production area.

But, he didn’t stop there. A Team Lead position in the Bosma Enterprises Contact Center opened up. Phil jumped on the opportunity of work and to no surprise, Phil was offered the job.

“I enjoy motivating and encouraging people,” says Phil. “This was the perfect job for me.”

Ever since that time, Phil has remained dedicated to his work. Recently, Phil was selected to take part in a Business Leadership Program put on by National Industries for the Blind. Phil, along with 22 other people who are blind or visually impaired working within management positions, was selected to take part in Effective Supervision Training.

This opportunity helped Phil to polish his supervisory abilities to perform jobs with greater productivity and effectiveness and to prepare for ever-increasing levels of responsibility.

“The nurturing and cultivating environment at Bosma Enterprises is made for success building,” says Phil. “Bosma is really great because everyone wants to be here and everyone has a heart for helping people.”
