Sarah's Story

“Being able to use my Braille skills to service other people makes me feel wanted, needed and valued as a Braille Transcriber.”

What one may see as a setback, Sarah has always seen as an opportunity. Blind since birth, Sarah began learning Braille when she was asmallchild. Ever since that time she has polished and mastered those skills. Besides her hard work and dedication to continuous learning, Brailleis what has led Sara to her success.

Before coming to Bosma Enterprises, Sarah lived in Fort Myers, FL. Sarah lived in Florida for a total of seven years while she obtained her Bachelors degree in Communication from Florida Gulf Coast University.

She attended Indiana University Northwest before transferring to Florida Gulf Coast University. After attending Indiana University Northwest for three years, Sarah took a year off from college to come to the Bosma Rehabilitation Center. After that time, she decided it was time to hit the books again. She finished her schooling but spent three years looking for employment. Finally, becoming fed up with not working and living with her parents, Sarah and her guide dog, Louigh, gathered their belongings and came to Indianapolis.

After just a couple of months in Indianapolis, Sarah became a part-time employee at Bosma Enterprises, working in the production area. After working in production for several months, Sarah caught wind of a Braille Transcriber position at AccessAble Printing, a division of Bosma Enterprises. This was right up her alley.

After an extensive application process and a full day of testing, Sarah was selected and offered the position. Without hesitation, Sarah accepted.

“I needed something that would stimulate my brain,” says Sarah. “I am getting to stretch my problem solving skills and creativity which is something I enjoy doing.”

A “computer geek,” as Sarah would describe herself, she enjoys anything that involves technology and learning.

Sarah is currently working on becoming a certified Braille Transcriber from the National Library Service. This means after an 18-month training course, Sarah will be qualified to transcribe Braille anywhere in the United States.

“I plan to blow the 18-month record out of the water and getting my certification done much faster,” says Sarah. “Being able to use my Braille skillsto service other people makes me feel wanted, needed and valued.”
