Providing Comfort in Crisis

Bosma Enterprises - 6/19/2020 1:36:15 PM

Kai was seeking support to help her cope with challenges brought by the coronavirus and reached out to Bosma Enterprises. In this blog post, she shares how the support she received from Bosma Enterprises, and our staff, brought relief during these uncertain times.

Bosma Enterprises is here to help individuals who are blind or visually impaired navigate through these difficult times. We understand current circumstances are a source of stress and anxiety for the blind community, as well as around the globe. To help combat the stress and anxiety people who are blind are facing through this pandemic, we have established a call-in line to provide resources and support to people in the blind community that may need to talk or resources to help combat the stress felt by COVID-19.
Kai Mwaafrika attended our Center for Visionary Solutions for the Blind in 2017. As a client, Kai obtained the comprehensive rehabilitation training she needed to live independently and navigate the world with vision loss. “Bosma goes above and beyond,” she said about her time in the program.
After obtaining training from Bosma Enterprises, Kai has been spending her time volunteering with Partners in Policies, advocating for the rights of people living with a disability.
The coronavirus and restrictions implemented by the Governor of Indiana have made it difficult for Kai and others in the blind community to obtain basic necessities. Bosma’s staff realized the need for wellness checks for present and past clients. Since the beginning, our programs team has been calling clients like Kai to check-in. They have also delivered care packages filled with items like A box of gloves, Echo Dot, hand sanitizer, mask, food, a white cane and other things to help to ease the stress during these challenging times. “The care box I received from Bosma was so delicious.  It included a meal kit that was easy for me to make.”
Before the support from Bosma Enterprises, Kai was looking for help from any direction. Not only is Kai navigating the world with limited vision, but she is also dealing with a hearing disorder and receiving treatment for lower back pain. Health problems have limited her ability to travel and do tasks like walking to the mailbox to get her mail, but Kai is doing her best to deal with the changes around her, and she is thankful for the care packages and phone calls from our staff and hopes other agencies that serve those living with a disability take notice.

For Kai, having the support of Bosma Enterprises means a lot. She knows through her own experience that our programs staff can relate to her situation and is thankful she can call our resource and support line to help deal with these challenging times.
