Bosma Enterprises has developed a training program to reduce high unemployment among individuals who are blind or visually impaired by preparing them for careers as Salesforce administrators. BosmaForce, an 18-week class offered entirely online to anyone throughout the country, is intended to prepare students for the Salesforce Administrator Certification Exam and place them into internships in the high-demand field.

If you have suffered from vision loss so severe that it keeps you from working, you might be eligible to receive monthly Social Security Disability benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) oversees two different disability programs, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The white cane is not only a tool, it is a symbol of freedom and independence. I remember the first time I embraced using a white cane. I got tired of depending on everyone else to take me places and worrying that I could never go anywhere alone. I was tired of explaining to people why I was walking slowly or why I might have bumped into them and feeling a need to apologize. However, once I started to carry a cane, I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally felt ok telling the world that I am a person with a visual impairment.

This past week, Bosma Enterprises embarked on a new venture that will forever change the trajectory of our company.

The Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services’ Business Enterprise Program (BEP) and  Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VR), is recruiting interested and qualified  candidates for 2017 BEP training class.

Years after my diagnosis and losing my career in finance due to vision loss, I was at home waiting for the other shoe to drop. And when it finally did, it was devastating. The progressive loss of my eyesight, its emotional toll and the loss of my independence had caused me to become a shell of who I was just a decade before.  In hopes of reclaiming some semblance of the life I once knew, I decided to look for a service opportunity where I might be able to use my skills for good, while rebuilding my confidence.

The Bosma Visionary Opportunities Foundation next fundraising event is on Monday, September 12 at Punch Burger.

What is it? – The 3D art pen is a new device that uses that same technology as 3D Printers.  It heats up plastic similar to the way a glue gun would and allows the user to create 3D objects quickly and easily.  The device was developed as an art tool, but can serve as an excellent tool for creating tactile maps and diagrams for people who are visually impaired.

This year, on July 26, is the 26th anniversary of the signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Each year, advocates look for ways in which to properly commemorate the ADA and to celebrate the promise of equal access that it represents. This year, we have a unique opportunity to raise our voices on behalf of equal access, and you are invited to be a part of this nationwide effort.

May is healthy vision month and I thought how ironic that in the past month my close call to vision loss has given me a new perspective on losing your sight. Working for Bosma Enterprises  has given me some insight to blindness and the people who are dealing with vision loss everyday, but it’s not until it happens to you that you really know what it’s like to be visually impaired.

A student from Drexel University is conducting a couple of studies and could use the help from people who are blind or visually impaired. His studies center around the experiences of a person who is blind in a couple of places. The first study is about sports teams websites and their accessibility. The second study is on the experiences of a person who is blind and a bad shopping experience.
