The white cane is not only a tool, it is a symbol of freedom and independence. I remember the first time I embraced using a white cane. I got tired of depending on everyone else to take me places and worrying that I could never go anywhere alone. I was tired of explaining to people why I was walking slowly or why I might have bumped into them and feeling a need to apologize. However, once I started to carry a cane, I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally felt ok telling the world that I am a person with a visual impairment.

The progressive loss of my eyesight, its emotional toll and the loss of my independence had caused me to become a shell of who I was just a decade before.  In hopes of reclaiming some semblance of the life I once knew, I decided to look for a service opportunity where I might be able to use my skills for good, while rebuilding my confidence.

Getting Started with the 3D Art Pen

What is it? – The 3D art pen is a new device that uses that same technology as 3D Printers.  It heats up plastic similar to the way a glue gun would and allows the user to create 3D objects quickly and easily.  The device was developed as an art tool, but can serve as an excellent tool for creating tactile maps and diagrams for people who are visually impaired.

His studies center around the experiences of a person who is blind in a couple of places. The first study is about sports teams websites and their accessibility. The second study is on the experiences of a person who is blind and a bad shopping experience.
