Preemployment Transition Services

Bosma’s preemployment transition services (pre-ETS) help students who are blind or visually impaired build the skills and confidence needed to pursue their first job. We provide individualized experiences that prepare you for employment and independence, even if you have little or no prior work experience.

Pre-ETS may include:

  • Career exploration activities
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Networking with successful blind and low-vision adults
  • Attending local and national conferences and advocacy events
  • Internships with local businesses
  • Assistance with locating scholarships

Participation in these activities demonstrates initiative and helps your resume stand out to employers.

Student Training and Employment Program

Bosma partners with the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to offer the Student Training and Employment Program (STEP) for students ages 16-22 who are blind or visually impaired. STEP places students in paid internships within the community, pairing each participant with a job coach for on-site training and support. All hours worked are compensated for by Bosma.

During the intensive course, students stay in Indianapolis, with lodging and most meals provided. Evening and weekend activities offer opportunities to practice social and dining skills, and training sessions may include:

  • Reviewing the day’s work
  • Identifying career paths and job goals
  • Understanding employer expectations
  • Creating a portfolio for future advancement
  • Developing strategies for job tasks
  • Practicing resume writing, job applications and interviews

There may be a minimal cost to the student or family for some recreational activities.
