STEP Program 2023
Bosma's Student Training and Employment Program (STEP) was tremendously successful. This year, 18 students who are blind or visually impaired came from all across Indiana to take advantage of the three-week program to learn the fundamentals of finding and keeping a job. During the program, students were provided with a well-balanced schedule of classroom learning, work and fun recreational activities.
Students also visited the Bosma Center for Visionary Solutions for cooking lessons with Bosma instructors. These classes added a unique aspect to the program. Many overlook cooking as a significant factor in independence. "Hot pockets and microwave meals will eventually get old, and learning to prepare your meals makes you even more independent," said Bosma's Youth Employment Specialist, Aaron See.
During the classroom portion, students prepare their resumes, giving them something tangible when applying for college or jobs. James Michaels, Bosma's VP of Programs, spoke with the students about interviewing and obstacles they may face when seeking employment or going to college.

As you can see from the list of employers, no job is the same. Participants worked at the Jordan YMCA, assisting in the daycare and housekeeping. Some of our students showed their artistic side by making balloon art for graduations and other special events at Banzai Balloons.
Our STEP program provides our participants with a sense of purpose and shows them there is hope after graduation while giving them valuable work experience. The program also educates the public on what a person who is blind can achieve when given an opportunity.
